Furfural

Furfural (C5H4O2) is an organic compound derived from agricultural byproducts, including corncob. It is a colourless to amber liquid with an almond-like odor. Today all major oil companies use furfural as selective solvent in the refining of lubricating oils.

Formic acid (HCO2H) is the simplest carboxylic acid. It is a colourless liquid having a highly pungent, penetrating odour used in a variety of industries including food chemicals, water treatment, drilling, petrochemistry and fracking.

Acetic Acid

Acetic acid (C2H4O2) is a carboxylic acid with antifungal and antibacterial properties. The largest single use of acetic acid is in the production of vinyl acetate monomer, followed by acetic anhydride and ester production.

Bio-Corn Plant to Commence
Production in 2020

After significant investment by ISONS Group in state-of-the art automated technology, the plant is in commercial production. After the hydrolysis and distillation processes, the main final product is furfural (5000 tonnes per annum) with additional byproducts, acetic acid (2500 TPA) and formic acid (300 TPA).

Bio-Corn has close to 200 full-time employees of various skill grades ranging from top-level management, chemical, mechanical and electrical engineers to operators and fitters. We consider ourselves a high-impact business that generates sustainable earnings for thousands of smallholder farmers for essentially their waste, significantly contributing to Kenya's GDP.

sustainability

We procure discarded corncob from thousands of local farmers in Kenya’s maize belt, which is the principal raw material we use in our process. We've identified value-add opportunities for corncob, an agricultural waste, to minimize our impact on the environment.

BIO-CORN PRODUCTS EPZ LTD

Our Bio-Corn plant is located on the outskirts of Eldoret, Kenya.  It was originally installed in 1972 by a Swiss conglomerate. Since rehabilitating the factory, we've installed state-of-the art technology to continue manufacturing furfural and other chemicals.
